I have tremendous respect to MIT for the ballsy moves they sometimes make at education technology. The most recent one (together with Harvard)  is releasing the platform of edX under an open-source license, as it was announced on their website. edX (how do you capitalize this? crazy..) is a joint MOOC project between Harvard and MIT. It is non-profit, yet there is a clear desire to make it at least self-sufficient, so it is in many way a direct competitor of for profit high-profile MOOCs like Coursera and Udacity.

As OSS Watch argues one can say that  the chosen licencing model (Affero GPL) is a cautious one,  but nonetheless it is an open model and you can fork it at GitHUB.
