It is interesting that while in informal settings practically everyone acknowledges that motivation of the students is the most important element for their academic success, we generally doesn’t do much about it. I mean, frankly: sometimes people say that a teacher should be energetic and enthusiastic and able to engage students, or sometimes interesting  lectures should be taught, but that is it. The whole approach of academia to curiosity and motivation is very passive and reactive. If someone has it, we are happy. If someone doesn’t have it, we don’t care much.

It was interesting to read Maryellen Weimer’s article on Faculty Focus about the topic. She practically says that there is hardly any research on curiosity and its role in learning. Well,  I would say it is ironic that the academic community never gave much though about if curiosity is important in learning. They were not much curious about it…
